A national dialogue on ‘Hybrid Rice – Harnessing Untapped Potential’ organised by the Bangladesh Rice Foundation was held at the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council in the capital on Saturday. Agriculture Secretary Nasiruzzam was present as the chief guest while ACI Chairman Anis Ud-Dowla was the special guest, said a press release. IRRI Bangladesh Country representative, Chairman BARC, Director General BRRI, Chairman, KGF and eminent rice scientists and representatives of all big seed companies were present at the dialogue. In his welcome speech Executive Director Dr Syed AB Siddiqui said that rice yields have undergone two major leaps because of the development and widespread adoption of semi-dwarf cultivars in 1960s and hybrid varieties in the 70’s.Two papers were presented by Masum Chairman, Supreme Seed and Dr. Jamil Hasan of BRRI.Noted scientists Dr. Z. Karim, Dr. Kabir, Srinivasa Kumar Karavadi, Dr. Bahandari took part in the discussion. Agriculture Secretary said that government is supporting the farmers by introducing new varieties, input support and giving emphasis on research.
